Newquay University Centre has developed an Industry focused and partnered FdSc Degree in Coastal Adventure.

A one of a kind degree with a focus on Coastal / marine / Ocean space combined with the Adventure industry

This is a specialist degree course that has been developed with an Industry partner to offer a very direct market place pathway for students to benefit from.

Living and studying on the coastline and rocky shores of Cornwall is a unique opportunity and makes this degree program very special. 30% of the degree will be delivered the Activity provider partner, meaning that 30% of the studies will be taking place in the Outdoor classroom including Adventure experiences.

All second-year students will have an opportunity to reflect on work experience hours and are tasked to design a poster/visual display which is showcased and assessed during our second-year work experience poster fair. We invite employers, other student year groups as well as members of our board of governors along to the event.

The Course will take place from Newquay University, however 30% is delivered offsite whilst taking part in Adventure activities, all over Cornwall and Devon.

There will also be field trips and some expeditions available through out the course which will see you visiting the Highlands of Scotland, SW France and Morocco.

On this course you will take part in many Adventure activities which will hopefully see you become qualified as a guide, instructor, coach, leader and facilitator of some.

You will be exposed to the opportunity to take part in many activities both as part of your studies and as extra curricular adventures.

Activities such as – Coasteering, Surfing, Kayaking, Paddle boarding, Power kiting, Monster SUP, Rafting, Power boating, Kite surfing, foiling, Sailing, raft building, Beach craft, team building games, camp craft, first Aid, lifeguarding and more.

You will also have the opportunity to gain qualifications in the following

• GCSE (or equivalent) – Minimum of Grade C/grade 4 in Maths, English Language and Science or Functional Skills – L2 Literacy and L2 Numeracy
• AS/A Levels – 64 UCAS tariff points to include 48 UCAS tariff points for A2 level in appropriate subjects
BTEC National Diploma/BTEC Extended Diploma/City & Guilds Advanced Technical Extended Diploma – 64 UCAS Tariff points required and in appropriate subject areas
• Access to HE Diploma in a relevant subject – 45 credits at level 3 (specific unit grades may be requested).
• International Baccalaureate Diploma – overall score of 24 points.
• Other qualifications will be considered.
• Mature applicants with relevant experience but without the stated qualifications will be considered individually and are encouraged to apply.

Students will be based at the main campus but will spend time with the Industry Partner team where they will learn from the staff about the business aspects of the sector and hone their practical skills.

As part of the programme students are expected to complete 100 hours of work experience at one or multiple locations. The students are given guidance on the expectation of the level, relevance and process of completing their work placements during the enrolment period.

It is expected that individual student’s source, liaise and organise their own placements relevant to their own PDP. There is a dedicated work experience module page which provides the students with relevant templates for the paperwork needed to notify us of placements, ensure health and safety regulations are met, and record hours gained.

Once the Students have gained some National Governing Body awards such as First Aid, lifeguarding, surf coach, Sup instructor etc then they will be employable in the Sector. Our connections within the industry will assist the Students in gaining employment both on a full or part time basis whilst studying and or during Holiday times.

Upon successful completion of the FdSc Coastal Adventure students will be able to progress onto the following programmes at (Level 6) Cornwall College: • BSc (Hons) Marine Sports Science (Newquay) • BSc (Hons) Environmental Resource Management (Newquay) Any student who has completed a TCCG approved programme and then opts to progress to a University of Plymouth validated programme, within Cornwall College will not be able to use those credits achieved on a TCCG programme as part of their overall degree classification. This therefore means that the outcome of the progression route will be based purely on the Level 6 modules. Following successful completion of this qualification the students will be qualified to work in a number of employment destinations such as; outdoor adventure centres, coaching, self-employment, event management, photography, outdoor education, environmental sector, health and fitness.

The Coastline has been a natural place for explorers and settlers since time began for its access to health, wealth and prosperity and with millions of miles of coastline worldwide this gives you an Adventure industry sector which accounts for multi Billions of Dollars.

Whether you want to teach Kite Surfing on Mecca island for Richard Branson or run wildlife tours along the northern reaches of the Scottish islands from a safari boat this course will enable to you achieve those dreams and much more.

Not only will you have and education in the Coastal Adventure industry but you will gain industry standard qualifications as well fast tracking your eligability to employment.
